Epidurals are awesome, except for when they don’t work. I can’t recall if I ever posted about my own delivery on my blog, but here the tl;dr version: my epidural became ineffective in blocking pain twice in as many hours, at which point they stopped upping the amount of the pain killers in it, because they worried it was interfering with the kid’s heartbeat. That was not fun. It was also not that common (the anesthesiologist was like “Well, this has never happened to me before”).

I hear you. Giada’s dresser is my dresser from when Chris and I cohabited before marriage. We converted it into a changing table briefly by adding velcro strips and a soft changing pad, until it became clear that it was better to use our bathroom counter. There’s also a nightstand from our previous bedroom set, and basically the crib was bought not to quite match but rather complement the rest of the furniture. The daybed came from ikea on a whim, and didn’t match the rest of the room at all, but I made it work into the room by buying a purple comforter that somewhat matches the purple lamps in our room a few months after the fact. The only “kiddie” stuff in her room are the wall decals (that peel off easily, I love it), and her crib bedding.

The funny part is that Giada’s room is more kickass than other baby rooms we’ve seen, or as one of the dads in our parenting group commented: “Wow, your kid’s set for a room into her teens”. =P

Yeah, we’re just not into matching stuff in general. Furniture, bedding, artwork… we like to mix it up. We’d rather buy stuff we can reuse when the kid is older or in other rooms of the house as we rearrange things. The only piece of “baby” furniture we’re buying is a crib; our dresser/changing table is a kitchen island, and everything else in the room will be either something we already had from our bedroom or my office with the exception of the sleeper sofa (we’re upgrading from an air mattress). We’d rather spend the theme decorating money on other stuff.

Eh, we weren’t going to do a themed room either, except that at 8 months along my nesting instinct finally kicked in and I decided on a theme that made sense but wasn’t going to (a) break the bank and (b) look stupid in 2 years. We also put a daybed in there so I could comfortably sleep there, which in hindsight was a lot more helpful than having tons of ‘baby furniture’. All it took was a couple of lamps, decals, and matching knick-knacks, nothing fancy.

If I had 4000 square feet to take care of, it would take me about eight days – meaning I’d get a day farther behind every week.

Fortunately, I have about 3000 less than that, and while it’s not exactly spotless, it’s at least relatively hygienic.
